It Started with the Mission Science Workshop bringing a 30'
Gray Whale Skeleton to our roof for Whale Week!
In the art classes the students started projects that use art to create solutions and promote change in response to the problems of our oceans and whales at risk. We went over many of the issues like overfishing (90% of the big fish gone), plastic garbage patches, coral reef deterioration, global warming, pollution, less than 1% of the ocean protected, sonar training etc.
And,using Sylvia Earle as a model, we have been trying to emphasize that it is not too late to help make changes.
They have a broad range to structure their art responses: for example, designing a children's book, writing a play, planning a civic response (petition-law change), design an app, movie PSA, song, comic book, sculpture public display, poster campaign etc.
The experience with the Mission Science Workshop allowed for a more personal connection to these wondrous creatures and generated more respect and real concern from the kids for our oceans at risk.
