Islamic-Geometric Floor Cloth
In conjunction with Social Studies study of Islam in Africa and the middle east,students researched the beautiful body of geometric patterns and motifs from that location in history. Practicing symmetry, rotation, slides, flips, turns, students create their own patterns and design their floor cloth. Students use compasses and rulers to create their designs.

Social Issue Poem-Collage inspired by Gordon ParksAfter studying the dynamic life and art of Gordon Parks, and drawing their own visual metaphor of the social justice issue they researched in LA, students wrote poems and are making art collages that represent the mood and feeling of their topic. Students looked at "American Gothic, Washington D.C." and some of Parks other poetry art and reviewed the power and impact of art. “I picked up a camera because it was my choice of weapons against what I hated most about the universe: racism, intolerance, poverty.” Gordon Parks |
. Self Portrait:Shadow Shapes
Students created a series of different techniques in self portraiture. Students try their hand at a very graphic style of portrait using the shadow shapes of their face. Referencing other graphic stencil styled portraiture, students created their own self portrait- graphic style. Students used photobooth on cartoon setting to make a shadow enhanced self photo. Using that as the basis for their stencil, students using chart stencil paper, cut their image and painted or pseudo "air brushed" their image. |
Illusion Visual Metaphor of Yourself
How does exploring perspective and point of view open possibilities in art engagement? Students learn about linear perspective in art inspired by the many pieces of art in the Renaissance period. Students study one and two point perspective and then apply it to their own illustration. Students study illusions from Magritte and M.C. Escher. The assignment is to create a Visual Metaphor illusion of their life. |
Paper sculpture layered art: Year of the Horse
After reviewing layered sculptured art by Calvin Nicholls and Jeff Nishinaka, students designed their paper sculpture layered art celebrating the Chinese year symbol of the Year of the Horse. Students created depth using the shadows from the layered paper and turned a 2D image into a 3D look. Scoring and many layers of details were emphasized. |
Asian Kites
Learning from Tyrus Wong with our fall visit to the Disney Museum, students will create their own design for an Asian Kite. Structure will try to be built to actually fly in the sky. Second part will be returning these kites in a drawing to an Asian American scene based on history or present tribute to the Asian American experience. |
